Garage wall repair is a common job after a car gets a little too close. The plasterboard wall inside this garage had been damaged by a car, and it needed a proper repair, not just filler.
The garage wall repair job
I patched the damaged area, set it in layers and feathered it out wide so the repair finishes flat and smooth with the rest of the wall.
4 proven steps for a smooth garage wall repair
- Remove loose material. Broken plaster and torn paper are cut back to a sound edge.
- Patch or back the hole. Small damage is patched; larger damage gets backing and a new piece of plasterboard.
- Set in layers. Several thin coats of compound, each left to dry, rather than one thick coat that can crack or shrink.
- Feather it out wide. The final coats are spread well past the damage so there is no hump, then sanded smooth ready for paint.
Check what’s behind the wall
If a car has hit the wall hard, it is worth checking the framing too. Garage walls can also have power points, switches or cabling, and any damaged electrical fittings need a licensed electrician.
Stop it happening again
A wheel stop, a parking mat or a simple marker on the wall can help prevent the next bump.

Frequently asked questions
Will the garage wall repair be visible?
Done properly and painted, the repair should not be noticeable. For the best match, the wall is usually painted from corner to corner.
Can you fix holes from doors, handles or furniture too?
Yes. Dents and holes in gyprock from all sorts of knocks are fixed the same way.
