Most cracks in plaster walls are cosmetic. Houses move a little with the seasons, timber frames dry out, and set joins that weren’t taped properly start to show. The usual “fix” is a smear of filler, and the crack is back within months. I repair cracks properly: rake out the crack, tape it where needed, set it in layers, sand smooth and paint, so the repair moves with the wall instead of splitting again.
I’m Dan, and I do every repair myself, with 35+ years in the building industry. I’ll also tell you honestly if a crack looks like more than a cosmetic problem.
When to get it checked first: cracks wider than a few millimetres, stepped cracks in brickwork, cracks that keep growing, or doors and windows that suddenly stick can be signs of structural movement. These should be assessed by a building inspector or engineer before any cosmetic repair.

Common Questions
Are cracks in my walls a structural problem?
Most hairline cracks in plasterboard are cosmetic and come from normal house movement. Wide, stepped or growing cracks, or doors and windows that start to stick, should be checked by a building inspector or engineer before repair.
Why do cracks come back after they are filled?
Filler on its own is rigid and doesn’t move with the wall. A proper repair rakes out the crack, uses tape where needed and sets it in layers, so it is far less likely to reappear.
Can you fix cracks above doors and windows?
Yes. These are common where the frame moves slightly. I re-set the joint with tape and compound, then sand and paint.
Do you fix cornice cracks?
Yes. I fill and re-set gaps where the cornice meets the wall or ceiling, and re-fix loose sections.
