A sliding shower door that keeps jumping off its track is one of those small problems that makes every shower a hassle. This week I was in Mermaid Waters fixing exactly that – in a rental property where the shower doors had come off their tracks and weren’t closing properly.

I took the shower doors off and found what I usually find: worn and broken rollers, a top track that had been knocked out of line, and no proper guides holding the doors in place. I fitted new rollers to each door, straightened and secured the tracks, and repaired the top of the door where the rollers mount.

While I was there, the tenant asked me to look at the ensuite shower screen too, which had the same problem. So both screens got the full treatment: all four wheels replaced, tracks straightened, new door guides and door stops installed, and both doors balanced so they slide smoothly and close properly.

Tips if your shower door is hard to slide
- Don’t force it. If a door drags or drops, forcing it can bend the track or crack the glass. Get the rollers looked at early.
- Keep the bottom track clean. Soap scum and hair build up in the track and make the rollers work harder.
- Most framed screens can be repaired. New rollers, guides and stops usually cost far less than a new shower screen.
- Check the silicone while you’re at it. If it’s mouldy or peeling, resealing around the screen keeps water where it belongs.
