Hallway Plasterboard Replaced Behind a Bathroom

Damaged plasterboard replaced, not patched.

Plasterboard replacement on the Gold Coast is often a better choice than patching when a section of wall is damaged. In this hallway, the plasterboard on the back of the bathroom wall was damaged, so I replaced the section rather than patching over it.

The plasterboard replacement job

I cut out the affected section, checked the framing behind it, fitted new plasterboard, then set, sanded and painted it to match the rest of the hallway. The result is a clean, solid wall with no patch lines showing.

Patch or replace?

Small holes and dents can be patched. Replacing a section makes more sense when:

  • the damage covers a large area
  • the plasterboard is soft, swollen or water-stained
  • the board has come away from the framing
  • there may be damage behind the wall that needs checking

Plasterboard replacement Gold Coast: 4 essential steps

  1. Cut back to sound board. The damaged section is cut out neatly, back to solid plasterboard and framing.
  2. Check the framing. Any damage or moisture behind the wall is dealt with before it is closed up.
  3. New sheet and joints. New plasterboard is fixed in, and the joints are taped and set in layers.
  4. Sand and paint. The joints are sanded smooth and the wall is painted so the repair blends in.

Behind a bathroom? If moisture is the cause, the source needs fixing first by the right licensed trade. For product information, Gyprock publishes guides on its plasterboard systems. More on our gyprock repairs and plaster repairs pages.
